The Bellierub on…climbing to the top
Those of you who have already read our book, "The New Beerbellie Diet and the
Search For A Six-Pack," may have noticed the slight reference to calorie burning
and low-calorie eating. One of the best calorie burning activities mentioned in the
book is the ever-dreaded stair climbing. You know what we're talking about. Think
back to the last time you ran up a flight of stairs. How heavy was your breathing?
How much were your legs burning? How fast was your heart racing? If you can't
remember the answer to these questions, then maybe it's time for a stair climb. If
Bob Beerbellie can reap the benefits of stair climbing, while being a cartoon
character, then just think how it can benefit an actual person. Enter Jon Blackburn.
Jon used to weigh 340 pounds. We don't care how tall he is because at that weight,
he would have to be over 9 feet high to have a healthy height-weight ratio or BMI
(Body Mass Index). He had trouble sleeping, had high blood pressure and would
get winded carrying in the groceries. Considering his weight at the time, carrying
the groceries probably took a few hours. Anyway, Jon decided to do stair climbing
as a way to burn extra calories and lose weight. He didn't try stomach staple
surgery or hypnosis. He didn't go to Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig. He didn't
"do" Atkins(is that somebody's daughter?). He lowered his daily calories with a well
balanced diet and climbed stairs. After a year he was down to 200 pounds. He now
claims to weigh-in at around 185 pounds. He sleeps better and his blood pressure
is down. He also has no problems carrying the groceries because there are not as
many of them and he is in better shape to handle the activity. Way to go Jon!! You
can visit his site at www.waswayfat.com to learn more about him. Jon doesn't
mention beer and we haven't talked to him yet, but we think he is a great example
of what can be accomplished without all the gimmicks and hype that surround diet
plans and products.

Here's some more proof that our fitness book is on the mark. We make the point
that the recommendation to drink 8 glasses of water came along when bottled
water was gaining in popularity. We think it is bull. Always follow the money!!
Chicago Health Magazine, in their March edition, reports that too much water
during exercise can be fatal. Yep, you heard that correctly. There is a condition
called Hyponatremia, or water intoxication. Hey, we're all for intoxication, but not
from water. Hyponatremia occurs when sodium in the blood falls to dangerously low
levels. This can cause the brain to swell and result in seizures, coma and even
death. So, too much water can kill you. What does The American College of Sports
Medicine recommend? The same as our book: Drink water when you are thirsty
and drink the amount that you have sweated out during exercise.
It sure is tough being right. Check out:

You won't be disappointed.
That's the Bellierub on… climbing to the top.
