The Bellierub on…
....getting up from your chair
The government sure likes to pay for studies. They'll study the mating
habits of lobsters or the amount of times a toad blinks his eyes. While some
(normal thinking people)may dispute the importance of this data, others
(those conducting the studies)consider it tax dollars well spent. Now, here
comes another gem from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
The Mayo Clinic is a highly respected research and health facility that
attracts top talent in the medical industry. People from all over the world
with various ailments will go there for help when local treatments are
ineffective. This place is top shelf when it comes to medical care and
advice.
Here is their latest discovery: Fat people tend to sit more than skinny
people. One more time, just in case you didn't read that correctly: Fat
people tend to sit more than skinny people.
Mayo conducted a study where they placed sensors on people to
determine how much they moved. The remarkable conclusion, after
considerable data and money was collected, is that fat people sit 2.5 hours
more per day than skinnier people. This means that obese people burn, on
average, 350 calories less per day as a result. Even after the researchers
tried to fatten up the skinny people with more calories and lighten the fat
people with less calories, the skinny people still moved around more. The
scientists said fat people have a low non-exercise activity thermogenesis or
NEAT, as they call it. Scientists are always coming up with acronyms for
stuff. Now obese people can claim, once again, that it's not their fault(see
Bellierub lawsuits). They have low NEAT.
The scientists concluded that obese people have a "biological need to sit
more." Sure, they have gravity working against them. You wonder if obese
people had to hunt and fight for their food to survive, if they would still have
this "biological need ." Remember, food is necessary to provide calories
(energy) for survival. If you do not move around much, you do not require
as much energy as those who do.
So, here is some NEAT advice from us: Get up from your chair and grab
another beer. When that beer is done, get up and grab another one.
These simple movements will help to burn more calories and help you lose
weight. Now, thanks to the Mayo Clinic, there is science to back it up.
That's the Bellierub on… getting up from your chair.
