| The Bellierub..... .... on the beer body The good news on beer and alcohol just keeps rolling in. As many of you can tell by now, we like to get right to the point and don't like beating around or on the bush too often. So here it goes: The University of Western Ontario(love those Canadians), have discovered that one glass of beer contains as many antioxidants as one glass of red wine. Antioxidants are believed to help destroy potential cancer-causing free radicals which roam the body. Dark beers are reported to have a greater benefit than lighter beers. There is no evidence however, that 2 light beers will "out-benefit" one dark beer. In other words, drink at your own risk. Tufts University's Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging have determined that silicon improves bone density. Can you guess what type of "food" provides the best form of silicon absorption? No, no, no... not the kind from fake boobs. That sort of silicon improves a different kind of bone density in men. We are concerned with something different here. Silicon found in whole grains is best absorbed when it is in beer. Alas, there is proof that beer can help bone density. Be careful though. Too much beer has been known to cause a lower then desired bone density in certain areas of the male anatomy. Remember, moderation is key. University College London has recently discovered that 2 pints of beer a day will not only kill brain cells but can help to make you smarter. How can that be? Well, out of 6,000 people evaluated, those who drank beer daily, scored higher on cognitive tests. The questions were not easy. Most of the respondents took longer to answer, "Do you know where your car is?" As opposed to the question, "Do you know where a good Pub is?" It seems that people who drink beer are also like computers. Their brain will input data and store it for future use. They also have the ability to prioritize information. Thus, the response time to various questions. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism found that men who drink in moderation, no more then 2 drinks a day, do not gain weight. Bellies Beware !! It appears that having that 3rd drink later in the evening can increase the size of ones stomach. Should you always adhere to this 2 drink limit? Most of the time you should. But remember that Binge Days are important to your lifestyle and sanity. As Bob Beerbellie discovered in our book, every once and a while you can exceed this 2 drink limit and still keep the pounds off while staying in good shape. Don't let the do-gooders discourage you. ________________________________________________________________________ Here's more news on booze that you may find interesting: An average man weighing 180 pounds is legally drunk in most states after consuming 4 beers in 1 hour. What about the average woman who weighs 180 pounds? She was caught feeding this average man even more beer per hour....and offering him a ride home. This gives the term, "drinking responsibly'" a totally different meaning. The beer industry reported 78.1 billion dollars in sales last year. According to our book, The New Beerbellie Diet, this would make beer the most purchased weight loss supplement on the planet. 100 million cases of Corona were sold in the U.S. to make it the top import. No report on lime sales from the fruit industry. 54.9 percent of U.S. adults drink once per month. That must mean that 45.1 percent don't. 6 percent of adult calories come in the form of alcohol. We're not sure if this study included all adults or just those who reported drinking alcohol. If it includes only those who drink alcohol, then the percentage would more then double since a little over half of the country's adult's fess up to cocktailing every month. If this all seems confusing, then grab another beer and read it again. As we learned earlier in this newsletter, beer helps with cognitive functions. It's been proven.
